Delivered in-person over five days, this 30-hour training is an introductory learning experience for aspiring recovery coaches. As participants interact as a cohort or in small groups, each will learn to:

• Describe the role of a recovery coach
• Build skills to develop a coaching relationship
• Explore the many dimensions and stages of recovery
• Discover attitudes about self-disclosure
• Describe the stages of change and their applications
• Increase awareness of power dynamics
• Experience recovery wellness planning

Cost

Through our partnership with the Government of Alberta and the Ministry of Mental Health and Addiction, the cost of the program is completely covered for approved individuals. This ensures that those who are committed to making a difference in the field of addiction recovery can access the training they need without financial barriers.

Applicants must be legally able to work with the vulnerable sector (pass a vulnerable sector check) and, if in recovery, must have a minimum of 18 months in recovery. 

Few professions draw more on one’s internal ethical resources than that of a recovery coach. Our care for our clients often feels like it conflicts with the care they are given elsewhere. We are constantly calling on our intuition to know the next right step.

Modelling what we coach can be a challenge, but it’s so important for the coach/participant relationship. In this course, we will explore some of the more common challenges we may face.

Most of us have common-sense ethical understanding, but what about when our coaching craft draws us into a grey area? What critical aspects are most important that we consider?

In this course, we will examine several scenarios designed to cultivate that inner wisdom, including:

• Understand what ethics are and why ethics are so important when performing recovery coaching
• Learn how to stay in your lane as a recovery coach
• Boundary management
• Understand and practice core values and ethical conduct
• Describe and model the decision-making process
• Define and exemplify wants versus needs
• Develop guidelines for making ethical decisions
• Apply the new learning to your everyday work as a recovery coach

Now that recovery coaches are being recognized as having such a profound impact in recovery, many more organizations are looking to hire coaches. Coaches that can easily demonstrate a high level of professionalism may easily assimilate into these new exciting employment opportunities.
 

During this two-day online course, participants will:

• Define professionalism as it pertains to recovery coaching
• Learn about and develop the various characteristics that a professional possesses
• Understand their personal accountabilities in their role as recovery coaches
• Learn the importance of the concept “stay in their lane” when it comes to working in a large system, like a hospital, court and/or treatment system
• Reexamine the roles of a recovery coach in order to maintain good boundaries when working in professional settings
• Have opportunities to practice and demonstrate newly acquired skills.

Please note: Some certification boards may not accept online training towards certification. As the Connecticut Community for Addiction Recovery (CCAR) is not able to reach out to individual boards, that responsibility is up to the individual participant.
